Sygehusapotek Fyn (SAF), the Hospital Pharmacy at Odense University Hospital (OUH), consists of the main pharmacy building located at OUH and a satellite department at OUH Svendborg Hospital. SAF also serves departments at the hospitals in Nyborg and Ærø as well as the Psychiatric Departments in Middelfart and Odense.

  • Distribution of drugs.
  • Clinical pharmacy including medication review, medication history, medication reconciliation and medication discharge consultation
  • Services in relation to clinical trials (some regarding production of cytostatic drugs for the individual cancer patient)
  • Information about drugs and drug management
  • Production of drugs: "ready-to-use" and drugs produced especially for individual patients
  • The Danish National Stability Lab (DNSL)
  • Research
  • SAF also produces medication for other hospitals in Denmark, for instance in collaboration with other hospital pharmacies in Denmark.

On an ongoing basis, the focus area for most projects at the hospital pharmacy is preparing for Nyt OUH (the New Hospital Project) which is expected to be ready in 2023. The level of services and tasks delivered by SAF at Nyt OUH will be of a different nature than today with continuous focus on patient safety and ready-to-use medication. This requires preparation and changes towards the new tasks.

In 2021, SAF had a turnover of about 1.2bn DKK. The hospital pharmacy currently has about 320 employees within different professional background (pharmacists, engineers, laboratory technologists, chemists, technicians, pharmaconomists, pharmacy assistants etc.)

One of our main research areas is in sector transitions, aiming to ensure quality and safety in patients medication when they undergo the transition from secondary to primary care following hospitalization.

The research unit is currently working on a project aimed at developing and testing a model in which clinical pharmacists and geriatric doctors conduct a telephone conference with general practitioners following discharge of geriatric patients. The goal with this project is to ensure the best transition from secondary to primary care regarding the patients medication and to enhance the dialogue between health care professionals from primary and secondary care. The project builds upon the results from another project recently conducted by the unit. In this large randomized controlled trial, it was found that an extended clinical pharmacist intervention, based upon medication review, motivational interviews, and follow-up with primary care, has the potential to reduce the number of hospital readmissions and emergency department visits.

If you are interested in learning more about the research units work or discussing the possibilities for future collaboration, please contact Head of Research Carina Lundby (carina.lundby.olesen@rsyd.dk, +45 60 14 32 58).
