Core Tasks

The department determines and treats diseases in the heart, lungs, oesophagus and the arteries.

The heart:

Bypass and heart valve surgery as well as combinations of the two, ruptures of the main arteries in the thoracic cavity, tumours and inflammatory conditions in the heart and heart valves.

The lungs:

Diagnostic evaluation and surgery for lung cancer, tumours in the thoracic cavity and treatment of major injuries in which the thoracic cavity organs have been damaged.We also treat extreme facial blushing and excessive perspiration of the hands.

Oesophagus:

Diagnostic evaluation of dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) and gastric acid reflux. Treatment of diseases in the oesophagus is in collaboration with Department A.

Arteries:

Diagnostic evaluation and surgery for hardening of the arteries, arterial aneurysms, artery lesions, complicated vein disorders, constructing dialysis pathways and kidney transplants.

 

 

Research Areas

The Heart, Lung and Vascular Surgery Research Unit (FOHLK) at Odense University Hospital (OUH) perform multidisciplinary clinical,- health economic,- translational,- and experimental research.

The unit is the headquarter of the Cardiovascular Center of Excellence (CAVAC) and a part of the Elite Center for Individualized Treatment of Arterial Disease (CIMA) and the Odense Artery Biobank. In addition, we collaborate with several institutes and departments under SDU and OUH, and have partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

The staff consists of professor, adjunct professors, associate professors, post docs., Ph.D. students and pregraduate research-year students, as well as technical administrative staff.

Those interested in research in the fields are always welcome to contact our research unit for participating in projects or building up their own projects.
